Instructed

Recently I had the privilege of spending time with three sweet and precious young ladies. I have watched their evolution from being three young girls to now being young ladies. They shared with me some difficult events that occurred in their lives. What most impressed me about them is their desire to seek advice. Although young adults, they recognized the need for wisdom from someone older. They did not come with an “I-know-it-all” attitude.

In Esther 2:10, we read that Esther was instructed by her cousin, Mordecai, who raised her as his daughter after both of her parents died, to not disclose her identity. She followed those instructions. Esther married and was made Queen and she still followed the instructions given to her by Mordecai. Although they were difficult but essential, she followed through. She trusted in Mordecai who obviously had her best interest at heart. Mordecai was known to daily walk before the royal court to check on her well being. He cared about what happened to Esther. Even as a young adult.

Millennials. Young adults. Late adolescents. Middle-aged adults. Older adults. We should take note of the beauty of their relationship. Those who are older and who have wisdom should be eager and willing to share advice with those who come to us. We should not have a “you-have-to-figure-it-out-yourself” stance. We are instructed to teach and encourage the younger men and women.
Those who are younger have to realize there are times you will need to seek wise counsel from those who are older. Esther saved many lives because she heeded the instructions Mordecai gave to her. She was instructed.

And so are we. What will we do?
